Mr Fowler and Newbattle School
They say a good school is at the heart of a community , with a guiding hand at the helm. William Fowler was just such a man, he appears to have never ending energy in his drive to support the men at the front and those back home. He seemed to get himself roped into every committee and fund raising scheme, I think this was partly due to the fact that several members of staff were away the war, two teachers and the janitors son would not return.
Here is a photo of Mr Fowler which appeared in The Times in 1918, the school had raised over £5,000 which was a vast sum of money in those days, indeed they were amongst the top five fund raisers in the entire United Kingdom. An amazing feat for a working class mining village.
