Newbattle at War a history of the Parish at war

Now featuring Scots in the Great War Living History Society.

Prvate George 'Doddy' Forbes

After the war the Forbes' left Newtongrange and immigrated to Australia, where they settled in town called Collie, ironically the centre of coal mining in Australia. This is the Federal Hotel where they lived. George or Doddy as he was known was just a lad of 15 when he went to war. The family never returned to Scotland.

In unfading memory of our dear son and brother, Drummer G H Forbes (Doddy), 330126 , 13th Royal Scots, killed by a shell near Arras on the 28th May,1918.

This day brings back sad memories

Of one who is laid to rest

But those who think of him tonight

Are those who loved him best.

He has left behind some aching hearts

That loved him very dear

Hearts that never can forget

For his memory is written here
